Catherine Hillis has painted all her life, winning hundreds of awards and honors at competitive shows regionally and nationally, and earning Signature Membership status with many watercolor organizations across the country. She’s proud to be one of 40 elected members of the prestigious Washington Society of Landscape Painters.
Hillis is a respected instructor and judge, teaching classes and workshops nationally and internationally. Her watercolor paintings are included in museum, corporate and personal collections and have been published in many venues, including Plein Air Magazine, American Artist Magazine, Splash 12, Splash 14, the Artistic Touch series of watermedia books, the Washington Post and the Best of Virginia series.
She has served as artist in residence in Dinan, France (2007), and at Hot Springs National Park (2010). She regularly competes in national watercolor exhibitions and plein aire competitions. Her plein air awards include the 2015 Best in Show at Piedmont Plein Air in High Point, NC; Honorable Mention in the 2015 Curacao Plein Air; Honorable Mention in the 2012 Mountain Maryland Plein Aire competition; Juror’s Choice in Ellicott City, Maryland, 2013 and Best Nocturnal, Mountain MD, 2014. The artist’s biography has been included in Who’s Who Among American Women since 2006.
Mrs. Hillis primarily paints in watermedia, including busy street scenes, historic architecture and her favorite, the marine landscapes near her home on Saint Simons Island, GA. The hallmarks of her work are atmospheric light.
